Landrover Malta Marathon 2009

Date 2/13/2009

During your stay at the San Antonio Hotel and Spa in Malta, you will be able to see The Malta Marathon 2009 which is the biggest athletic event on the island. The inaugural event was held in 1986, and 2009 will see the 24th edition of the Malta Marathon. Such has been the impact of this race that today it has become one of the highlights of the winter calendar of events in Malta - almost as traditional as the Maltese village festivals held in summer.

The Malta Marathon, together with the concomitant Malta Half Marathon, attracts more than 1,000 runners. About 700 of these participants are foreign runners who combine their first really long event of the year with a winter break in a February/March Mediterranean climate that almost invariably proves to be surprisingly warm and pleasant.

Most marathon runners taking part in the Malta Marathon and Half Marathon are usually more interested in the fact that there is a significant drop (almost 200 metres) from start to finish.  The race, however, passes alongside a number of scenic and historic sights that one would do well to highlight.

The Marathon starts off at Mdina, - the old fortified capital perched on top of a hill in the centre of the island. The route then goes past Verdala Palace, the former summer residence of the Grand Masters of the Knights of St. John. After leaving the high grounds of the Dingli and Rabat areas, the route gradually descends to sea level. On their way, the runners will go through a number of villages before coming towards the finish where they can admire the magnificent view of Valletta and Marsamxett Harbour. The finish at the Ferries in Sliema is next to one of the most popular promenades and shopping areas on the island.

Like the Marathon, the Half Marathon starts at Mdina and finishes at Sliema but is downhill almost all the way. If you’re looking for a fast time, then look no further.
