Harry Potter controversial play in Malta
Staying at the San Antonio Hotel & Spa could be the chance for you to see the play at the centre of the theatre debut of Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe controversy is to be staged in Malta starting November 2 at St James Cavalier.
Equus, known world-wide as a theatre classic, is being staged by local theatre company Unifaun and will include a host of established actors like Alan Paris in the main role as Dr Martin Dysart, Pia Zammit, Colin Willis, Lilian Pace and Jean Pierre Agius.
The other roles will be portrayed by some of the most exciting prospects for Maltese Theatre like Sean Buhagiar who undertakes the demanding role of Alan Strang, the troubled protagonist of the play, Jo Caruana, Jan Zammit, Jovan Pisani and Clayton Camilleri. The direction of the play has been entrusted to the capable hands of Marcelle Teuma.
Equus introduces us to psychiatrist Dr Martin Dysart who is entrusted with the care of troubled teenager Alan Strang after the latter committed an unspeakable crime. As Dr Dysart starts exploring the boy's psyche and his fascination with horses, he starts realising that he is actually facing his own demons and that this case will haunt him for the rest of his life.
Described as an "Electrifyng Evening of Theatre" by the Sunday Times of London, Peter Shaffer's Equus is without doubt one of the greatest English post-war plays. As a work of art, it is magnificent. Rarely does contemporary drama probe so deep. When the ground-breaking production of Peter Shaffer's Equus premiered at the National Theatre on July 26 1973, its theatrical impact was unprecedented. It was the most talked-about new play in London.
The play went on to win a series of awards, namely the Tony Award for Best Play. Unifaun Theatre Artistic Director, Adrian Buckle, commented that "Unifaun are proud to be able to bring such a great classic back to the Maltese islands. Although not a new piece of writing, the play remains in line without policy of staging great scripts that challenge an audience. Marcelle Teuma's vision and Pierre Portelli's set design will also help this production a visual feast and one of the greatest events of the theatre season."
Tickets are available at the price of Lm6.50 (€15.14) from St James Cavalier and at a concessionary price of Lm5.50 (€12.81) for the 2nd November performance.
